Why most SA Shopify stores underperform

Spinning up a Shopify store is easy — building one that converts SA shoppers, looks unmistakably yours, and ships on time isn't. Here's what we see go wrong, again and again.

Anti-pattern 01

You bought a R3 000 theme. So did 200 000 other stores.

Free and marketplace themes are designed for everyone — which means they're designed for no one in particular. They lock you into a layout, force generic colour systems, and quietly tell visitors "this brand is small and template-y".

What it costs: conversion penalty + zero competitive moat — you compete on price by default.
Anti-pattern 02

The checkout works… until a customer hits "Pay" with a SA card.

Default Shopify Payments isn't available in ZAR. Stores end up with foreign gateways that charge FX fees, decline local cards, or send shoppers off-site for OTPs that never arrive — and the cart abandons.

Product pages that read like a database, not a sales pitch.

Bullet-listed specs, three identical-angle photos, no size guide, no reviews, no "what's in the box", no trust signals. The product page is the closer — most stores treat it like a placeholder.

The store loads in 6+ seconds on mobile in Johannesburg.

Bloated theme JavaScript, oversized images, ten tracking pixels, four review apps loading in the head. SA mobile data is expensive and slow — every second of load time loses shoppers your ads paid for.

What it costs: Google demotes you in search, ads cost more, mobile bounce rate climbs above 70%.

Honest answers about pricing, platforms, payments and timelines — the stuff most agencies dodge in proposals.

Why Shopify and not WooCommerce or a custom build?
Shopify wins on time-to-market, PCI compliance, uptime and integrations — you ship in weeks, not months, and you don't run servers. WooCommerce is cheaper to license but more expensive to run (hosting, security, plugin maintenance) and a real risk for non-technical teams. Custom builds make sense only at very high scale or with unusual commerce logic — and even then, often Hydrogen-on-Shopify is the right answer. We'll tell you honestly which is right for you before you commit.
Can I migrate from WooCommerce / Magento / Wix to Shopify with you?
Yes — migrations are roughly 30% of what we do. We script product, customer and order migrations, preserve URL structure for SEO (or set 301 redirects), and run the new store on a separate domain until launch so the old one keeps trading. Migration is typically a 2-week add-on to a Growth or Plus build.
Will I be locked into Sitect to maintain the store afterwards?
No. You own the theme code (MIT licensed), the Shopify store, every connected account, and all your data. We hand over a complete admin handbook and Loom tutorials. If you want ongoing support we offer a monthly retainer (from R2 600/mo) — but it's optional.
How long does a custom Shopify build really take?
Starter Store: 4 weeks. Growth Store: 5–7 weeks. Plus / Headless: 8–14 weeks. The biggest schedule risks are usually waiting on product photography, brand assets, and decisions about gateways and couriers — we send you a content brief on day one to surface those early.
Which SA payment gateway should I use?
Honest answer: it depends on your card volume, average order value, customer demographics and risk profile. Yoco is great for low-to-mid volume merchants with simple needs. Payfast is solid for established brands and supports EFT/QR/Snapscan. Peach is the choice for sophisticated risk needs and international cards. Ozow belongs in every checkout for instant EFT. We usually wire up 2–3 gateways so shoppers always have a path that works for them.
Does the store handle 15% VAT correctly?
Yes — every Sitect build is configured for SA VAT from day one: 15% inclusive pricing display, separate-line VAT on invoices, valid SA tax invoices generated for every order, and VAT-exempt edge cases (export sales, zero-rated products) handled correctly. We also configure Shopify to issue compliant SA tax invoices that satisfy SARS audit requirements.
Will the store work for POPIA compliance?
Yes. Every build ships with a privacy policy template (you customise to your operation), a cookie banner with granular consent, customer data export & delete flows (Shopify supports these natively), and breach-notification procedures. We also configure Klaviyo and ad pixels to respect consent state.
What if I have less than R14k right now?
Have an honest conversation with us. We've helped early-stage founders launch on a tighter budget with a "v1 → v2" plan — a leaner v1 (single-template, 1 gateway, 10 products) that proves the offer, then a fuller rebuild once revenue is flowing.
