Finding a trustworthy contractor in SA is a coin toss

Finding a trustworthy contractor in SA is a coin toss. Homeowners ask in WhatsApp groups, get a 'my cousin knows a guy' referral, then wait for quotes that never arrive — or worse, get a contractor who disappears mid-job. Quality tradespeople have the opposite problem: they're great at their craft but can't reliably reach new customers without going on AdWords or door-knocking.

Pain 01

The WhatsApp-group lottery

Homeowners ask "anyone know a good plumber in Faerie Glen?" in a suburb WhatsApp group, get 3 "my cousin knows a guy" referrals, message all of them, hear back from one, and three days later still have a leaking tap.

What it costs: 3 days of messaging for a 30-minute job — and a wet kitchen floor while you wait.
Pain 02

"My quote will follow shortly"

Half the contractors say they'll quote "by end of day" and never do. The ones who do quote arrive at different prices for the same job, with no consistent way to compare scope, parts, callout fees, or VAT inclusion.

What it costs: uncertainty, missed deadlines, and a creeping suspicion you're being upsold.
Pain 03

Pay-upfront, disappear-with-deposit

"50% upfront for materials" is standard — and most of the time it's fine. But every SA homeowner knows someone whose contractor took the deposit, did half the job, and ghosted. There's no recourse and no escrow.

What it costs: R5 000 deposits walking out the door — and zero way to claw it back.
Pain 04

Quality tradespeople, invisible online

The other side of the marketplace hurts just as much. Excellent plumbers, electricians and painters can't reliably reach new customers without R10k/month on Google Ads, door-knocking, or relying on word-of-mouth that takes years to build.

What it costs: idle Tuesdays, low utilisation, and the best craftspeople undervalued.
How LocalHands works

Four steps from leaky tap to job done

LocalHands matches homeowners with vetted local contractors based on job type, suburb, and verified reviews. Homeowners post the job (with a photo of the leaking tap or the wall to paint); contractors in that suburb quote; the homeowner picks by price, rating, and proximity. Payment is held in escrow until the job's done. WhatsApp updates keep both sides in the loop from booking to completion.

1

Post the job

Snap a photo, type one line, drop a pin on your suburb. We auto-detect the category and route to verified contractors.

For homeowners

Book a vetted local pro in minutes — not days of WhatsApping

No more chasing referrals through three different group chats. Post once, get matched to contractors in your actual suburb who've been rated by your actual neighbours.

Vetted contractors

Every contractor ID-verified, references checked, insurance confirmed before they're allowed to quote.

Escrow payments

Funds held in Yoco escrow. Released only when you confirm the job's actually done. Zero deposit-and-vanish risk.

Verified reviews

Only contractors who actually did the job can be rated. Every review photo-backed, no fake 5-stars.

WhatsApp updates

Booking confirmed, contractor en route, arrived, job done — every step pushed to your WhatsApp automatically.

Suburb-level matching

Pretoria East jobs go to Pretoria East pros. Sandton to Sandton. Distance is part of the ranking, not just price.

Dispute resolution

Something's wrong? Sitect's team mediates — refund options, partial release, or a re-do at the contractor's cost.

For contractors

A steady flow of qualified jobs — at zero ad-spend

If you're great at your trade but exhausted from chasing leads, this is for you. We send pre-qualified jobs from your actual suburb directly to your phone — you quote, you win the work, you get paid out fast.

Qualified leads only

Homeowners must add a photo, description, and confirm budget intent before posting — so you're not quoting tyre-kickers.

Fast payouts

Escrow releases to your Yoco / bank account within 24h of job completion. No 30-day payment-terms nonsense.

Rep that compounds

Every 5-star review boosts your ranking. Better-rated pros get more job notifications — quality compounds.

Integrated with the tools homeowners & contractors already trust

LocalHands plays nicely with the payment rails, communication channels and mapping services already used by South African small businesses and households.

Yoco

Primary card-payment rail and escrow provider. Homeowners pay in, contractors paid out — all on Yoco's SA-licensed infrastructure.

Payfast

Secondary card + EFT rail for homeowners who prefer Payfast's checkout. Same escrow flow, same release on completion.

WhatsApp Business (Twilio)

All booking updates pushed to WhatsApp via Twilio's WhatsApp Business API — templates for booking, en-route, arrived, completed.

Google Maps

Suburb auto-detect, contractor distance calculation, address autocomplete tuned for SA suburb naming conventions.

Aramex

For categories where the contractor ships materials or kit (curtains, blinds, fabric, custom orders) — Aramex pickup & tracking.

OneSignal push

Mobile push notifications for new jobs, quote received, contractor en route, payment released — across both iOS and Android.

Trust & safety

Built so both sides can transact confidently

The South African home-services market has been burned by enough cowboy-contractors and disappearing-deposits that "trust" can't be a marketing word — it has to be a system. Here's how we build it in.

Contractor vetting

ID-verified via Home Affairs database lookup. References checked. Insurance certificate validated. Photo verification of work portfolio before they're allowed to list.

Escrowed payments

Yoco holds the homeowner's payment in a regulated escrow account. Funds release only after the homeowner confirms — or after a 48h auto-release if no objection. Both sides protected.

Verified-only reviews

Only homeowners who paid for and completed a job can post a review for that contractor. Reviews are photo-backed where applicable. No paid-promotion 5-stars — ever.

POPIA-first data handling

Personal info encrypted at rest, data residency in AWS Cape Town, explicit consent for every data point, full export & delete-on-request. Information regulator-compliant from day one.

Dispute mediation

Not happy with the work? Open a dispute. Sitect's mediation team reviews evidence within 24h and arbitrates — partial release, full refund, or remedial visit at contractor's cost.

Time-bounded SLAs

Contractors who consistently quote slowly, no-show, or cancel get auto-deprioritised. The marketplace mechanically rewards responsiveness — slow contractors drift to the bottom.

WhatsApp paper trail

Every message between homeowner and contractor logged. If a dispute starts, the audit trail is already there — no he-said-she-said.

Two-sided ratings

Contractors rate homeowners too — for clear briefs, prompt payment, fair scoping. Difficult homeowners get filtered out of the marketplace as fast as cowboy contractors.

FAQ

Everything an SA homeowner or contractor asks first

Honest answers — about vetting, escrow, recourse, coverage, and what happens when something goes wrong.

How are contractors actually vetted?
Every contractor goes through a 5-step check before they're allowed to quote: (1) SA ID verification via Home Affairs lookup, (2) two reference checks with previous clients, (3) public liability insurance certificate validated, (4) a portfolio of at least 3 prior jobs with photos, and (5) a 30-min onboarding call with a Sitect Trust & Safety team member. Trade-specific qualifications (electrician registrations, plumber PIRB numbers etc.) are verified where legally required.
How does the escrow actually work?
When you hire a contractor, you pay the full amount to LocalHands via Yoco or Payfast. The money sits in a regulated Yoco escrow account — not in the contractor's account, not in LocalHands' working capital. When you confirm the job is done in the app, the funds release to the contractor's payout method within 24 hours. If you don't confirm and don't dispute within 48h of the contractor marking complete, funds auto-release (with photo proof of work attached to the file). You can pause the release at any point during that window if something's wrong.
What if I'm not happy with the work?
Open a dispute in the app within 48h of completion. You'll be asked to upload photos and a description of the issue. A Sitect Trust & Safety mediator reviews the case within 24h — they'll look at the original brief, the contractor's deliverable, the photo evidence, and the WhatsApp logs. Outcomes can be: (a) full refund and release, (b) partial release (you keep some, contractor gets some), or (c) a no-charge remedial visit by the same contractor or a different one. Mediation is free to both parties.
How do I become a contractor on LocalHands?
Download the contractor app (iOS or Android), tap "Become a pro", and walk through the 5-step verification process above. The whole thing takes roughly 3-4 working days, mostly waiting for reference call-backs. There's no listing fee — LocalHands takes a 12% service fee on each completed job. No subscription, no monthly minimum, no fee on quotes you didn't win.
What areas does LocalHands cover?
Currently live across 28 South African metros, including all major Gauteng (Johannesburg, Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, Sandton, Roodepoort), Cape Town and Cape Peninsula, eThekwini (Durban, Umhlanga, Ballito), Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha, East London, Bloemfontein, Polokwane, Mbombela, Kimberley, and a handful of secondary cities. If your suburb is covered for at least 3 of our top categories (plumbing, electrical, painting, gardening, cleaning), you'll see it during signup.
When do contractors actually get paid?
Funds release to the contractor's payout method within 24 hours of homeowner confirmation, or within 24 hours of the 48h auto-release window expiring. Payout methods supported: Yoco wallet (instant, R0 fee), SA bank EFT (1-2 business days, R0 fee), or Same-day EFT (within 4 hours, R8 fee). Contractors see their pending payouts and payout history in the earnings dashboard.
How does LocalHands handle POPIA?
Three layers: (1) All personal data is encrypted at rest and in transit; data residency is in the AWS Cape Town (af-south-1) region. (2) We collect minimum data necessary — phone, suburb, photo of the job — and ask for explicit consent on anything else (location tracking, push notifications, marketing). (3) You can export all your data, withdraw consent, or request full deletion from Settings → Privacy at any time. We have an Information Officer registered with the Information Regulator; their contact is in our Privacy Policy.
What if my contractor and I have a dispute — who do you side with?
Neither, by design. The mediator's job is to follow the evidence. The brief (with the homeowner's original photo and description) is the contract. If the work delivered matches the brief, the contractor's case is stronger. If it doesn't, the homeowner's case is stronger. WhatsApp messages and uploaded photos are weighed as evidence. We err on remedial-visit-first rather than refunds where possible — the goal is the homeowner gets the work done and the contractor gets paid for honest effort. We publish mediation case-summaries (anonymised) so both sides see how decisions are made.

Get the leak fixed, the lights working, the garden trimmed — on the most-rated platform in your suburb.

LocalHands is Sitect's flagship South African home-services product. Available now on web, iOS and Android — for both homeowners and contractors. It's free to download, free to post a job, and you only pay when the work's actually done.
